Road trips around Australia

The COVID pandemic has brought with it a host of travel restrictions and border closures that have put our international holiday plans on hold for the time being.

It’s time, then, for us to think about trips we can take closer to home. We’re extremely fortunate that we live in an expansive country that has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in hitting one of our pristine beaches, hiking through lush rainforest or sightseeing in one of our major cities; travelling Australia by car opens you to so many exciting new experiences.

Why should I travel by car?

Taking a flight from one side of our vast country to another does make a certain amount of sense. However, if you travel by car, you will be experiencing a freedom that is so unique – you can visit any location you want! Not only that, but taking to the road will help you to experience the sheer beauty of our Australia.

Need a hand with some ideas for your next big road adventure? We’ve put together a few suggestions you may want to consider:

Trip 1: The Great Ocean Road (1 Week)

Experience one of the world’s most scenic drives, a breathtaking 664km drive down the south-west coast of Victoria. This trip has everything from craggy cliffs to beautiful beaches!

Start at the surfing capital of Torquay and ending in the charming fishing village of Port Fairy, you’ll find plenty of adventure along the way. Of course, you can’t miss the 12 Apostles. These majestic limestone rocks rise from the Southern Ocean, and are an absolute must-see.

Regardless of whether you want to get into nature or just sample the local produce, the Great Ocean Road showcases Australia at its finest.

Trip 2: The Coral Coast (2 Weeks)

The Coral Coast region of Western Australia starts just under 2 hours north of Perth, and runs north to Exmouth.

This trek includes some of Australia’s best known holiday experiences, from the Pinnacles and Kalbarri National Park to the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and the Pink Lake. There is also the otherworldly Ningaloo Reef, where you can happily swim alongside the world’s largest fish, the whale shark.

Trip 3: The East Coast (1 month)

The East Coast of Australia is amongst the most popular road trips in the world.

You could easily spend an entire month traversing the breadth of this long stretch of coastline between Melbourne and Cairns. It would take you a jaw-dropping 50 hours of continuous driving to tackle the entire journey, so we recommend that you take your time!

With amazing beaches to explore along the central and southern coasts of NSW, before your voyage takes you to Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, you’ll be spoilt with world-class scenery along the way.

Dos and Don’ts

Before you embark on your road trip of choice, it is important to remember a few things:

• DO: carry plenty of water.
• DO: pack plenty of food as you’ll never know where you will end up staying for the night
• DON’T: drive at night, as you may risk hitting one of our beloved kangaroos or wallabies, who tend to travel in droves as the sun starts to set.
• DON’T: feed local wildlife when out in the countryside. As hard as it is to resist, feeding them will likely do more harm than good!
