Cheques have now ended

You can no longer write cheques from your account or deposit cheques you receive at any of our branches. The use of deposit books is also discontinued.

Why we’re ending our chequing service

The number of Australians using cheques has rapidly declined. Most people now use Internet or Mobile Banking instead.

Cuscal - our payment services provider has made the decision to stop their chequing services, which means there will be some changes on how you currently use your account.

The following UniBank cheque services will be discontinued:

  • Issuing of bank cheques
  • Replacement cheque books
  • Cheque book services
  • Over the counter services at the National Australia Bank including all bank cheques, cashing of personal cheques and/or making deposits to a Unibank bank account
 

17 November 2023 

(concluded)

All personal cheques, bank cheques and deposit book services will cease.

Any uncashed cheques will be dishonoured, you and the payee will need to arrange another method of payment.

 
 
 

What do I need to do

  • For security reasons, please destroy your cheque or deposit books. Alternatively, you can bring them into your local branch and we’ll destroy them for you.
  • If you still use cheques, you’ll need to make alternative arrangements.

If I receive a cheque after 17 November 2023, where can I bank it?

You’ll still be able to deposit cheques at more than 3,300 Australia Post locations across the country, thanks to our partnership with Australia Post. To make a deposit, you’ll need your Visa Debit Card and PIN to process the transaction. Please allow up to 7 business days for your cheque to clear.

Getting a Visa Debit Card to transact on your account

If you need a replacement Visa Debit Card to use at Australia Post, you can request this by logging into Mobile or Internet Banking. If you’ve never had a Visa Debit Card on your account, please complete the Account access application form.

Consider having funds directly credited to your bank account by providing your BSB and account numbers to those making the payments.

What happens to my cheque if it is presented after 17 November 2023?
