This magnificent milestone is one that we plan to celebrate with our members throughout the year. We have set up a dedicated 50th Anniversary page on our website to help communicate this to our members. When a group of colleagues led by James Vallve JP from the Chemistry Department at the University of Western Australia came together in 1963 to discuss setting up a small credit society for university staff, few would have imagined that the credit union they had in mind would be operating more strongly than ever 50 years later. Since the time it was officially established in March 1964, Unicredit has undergone many changes, all of them responses to the changing needs of members and to developments in the financial services industry more generally. The core aim of the Society, however, has remained the same – to provide highly personalised service, competitive rates, fair fees, and a relevant suite of products to our members. Today, Unicredit remains an independent, State based, member owned credit society based on the principles of mutuality. We have grown into a strong niche market provider of financial products and services in Western Australia with 4 branches and more than 7,000 members. While membership eligibility has been broadened so that it is now open to all Western Australian residents, we continue to have a very close connection to the university sector. Mutuality ensures that Unicredit is owned and directed by our members, and that all the profits generated from our operations are used for the sole purpose of improved services to members. Reinvesting profits back into the business is crucial to enabling us to continue to provide an efficient and secure environment for members to conduct their financial transactions. We intend to make the Annual General Meeting in November a showcase event in our anniversary calendar and we expect many members to join us for that meeting and the social function following it. This is an exciting time for Unicredit as we acknowledge our beginnings, celebrate our achievements and plan for the future.
